Through exposure to music with a range of technical requirements, players in this stage will develop rhythmic and tonal skills, as well as learn how to interpret basic dynamic and style markings.
Repertoire for the Stage 1 String Orchestras include arrangements of music from the classical canon by Beethoven and Telemann as well as works especially for young musicians by respected pedagogical composers such as Richard Meyer and Stephen Chin.
Our conductors for our Stage 1 String Orchestras 2022 are Victoria Jacono-Gilmovich (SYO Alumni)
Niamh Armstrong (SYO Alumni), Sandi Oh (SYO Alumni) and Alina Belshaw.

“I started playing violin on my fifth birthday. The violin was the present I wanted. Mum tried to talk me out of it but it didn’t work. The violin is my baby and my passion. I play the piano too. When I grow up I want to be a paediatrician or a violin teacher or a conductor in Sydney Youth Orchestra. Russian composers are my favourite and my favourite piece is Russian Soldiers’ Dance.”
